The main goal of a farm worker who deals with animals is to harvest products from the different animal crops. These products may include meat, fur, skins, feathers, eggs, milk, and honey. To harvest them, the farmworker's array of duties includes feeding, watering, herding, grazing, branding, de-beaking, weighing, catching, and loading animals. It may also include artificially inseminating cattle and equines and providing preliminary care.
Prior experience with the machines used to harvest milk or other products is highly beneficial for this position, and the majority of the work is outdoors and can take place in extreme cold or heat. The hours typically begin early in the morning and can last all day, and they may be given tasks from a supervisor. While the work favors physical action, good knowledge of animal husbandry is also necessary, and they usually work with other farmworkers and ranch supervisors.
While educational requirements are not strict for this position, farmworkers have a wide range of tasks which may also include driving trucks, tractors, and other equipment for distributing feed to animals, operating animal husbandry equipment such as cattle chutes, dehorners, feed trailers, milking equipment and sterilizers, animal shearing, and clipping equipment, and more. They must be able to follow directions, yet there is also a high degree of freedom in this job, and they must be able to plan and execute tasks without immediate supervision.
