Fire inspectors are responsible for ensuring that facilities are compliant with applicable codes and laws, and they are often employed by emergency response service companies and government entities. Their duties revolve around inspecting fire safety plans and the systems needed to extinguish fires to ensure that they comply with local laws, and they may also issue permits and investigate origins of fires.
Those in this position help facilities determine what must be done in order to comply with regulations and laws, and it is very important to follow up with inspected companies to ensure this compliance in the long run, as well. Public speaking skills are beneficial for this position, as they may occasionally be involved in developing and administering safety education programs. Travel is often required to visit facilities and perform fire inspections, so a valid driver’s license is generally required. Sometimes, fire inspectors may be sought in emergency situations to provide additional support, which may involve driving an emergency vehicle.
Aspiring fire inspectors should be familiar with all laws and regulations regarding fire prevention, and the ability to perform CPR is also important. A minimum of a high school diploma is generally required, and a college degree may also be required by some employers.
