Strong interpersonal skills are important in this position in order to facilitate communication between specialists and patients and provide technical and procedural information to patients and their families. These practitioners perform a variety of dermatology procedures, including biopsies and skin therapy, and also prescribe medications as needed. They must always follow strict safety and privacy guidelines to prevent accidents on the job and maintain accurate patient data for future reference. Some may participate in quality assurance meetings to suggest ways to improve efficiency and service quality or serve as patient-advocates by following-up on recovery after services have been applied. They also interact and exchange information with health and dermatology specialists and report their progress to the laser dermatology services supervisor in their area.
Those in this position must be proficient with personal computers to record medical data and evaluate care to measure success in reaching health outcomes. A bachelor's degree in dermatology nursing and advanced laser certifications may be required for this position, and prior work experience in a nursing capacity is highly beneficial. Laser and other advanced dermatology certifications are also helpful.
