Security screeners for airlines work primarily in airports to perform screenings of airline passengers and/or cargo via physical searches, X-rays, and EDTs to prevent unauthorized items from being carried onto airplanes; they also screen and search checked-in luggage.
Employers often prefer candidates with prior experience as security screeners, but will also provide on-the-job training. A high school diploma or GED may be a minimum requirement for this position, and candidates must pass security clearance, background checks, and drug tests. They must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as in a team environment. Interpersonal and customer service skills are important, and some may be required to attend training classes to improve their performance.
Security screeners for airlines must be physically fit, as they may need to perform heavy lifting in excess of 30 lbs., and be able to stand for long periods of time. Flexibility is helpful, as most airports are open 24/7 and the ability to cover for co-workers outside of regular shifts is highly beneficial. They may be required to troubleshoot minor problems related to the equipment used in their work, and some may also train new security screeners.
