Job Description for Supportive Residential Counselor
A supportive residential counselor works in a live-in facility to provide counseling services to residents. This may be - for example - a facility for adults with addictions, people with disabilities, the elderly, youth in summer camps, or troubled youth, among others. When there are conflicts or crises within the residence, supportive residential counselors must provide both group and individual counseling. He or she should also conduct ongoing evaluations to identify potential conflicts and prevent them when possible, and also make sure all rules are followed at all times. Supportive residential counselors may also be in charge of checking in clients and providing input when they are ready to be discharged. He or she may not only sit in for therapy, but also participate directly in recreational activities with clients. Individuals in this position may be offered room and board at the residence; when working with youth, they may sleep in a dorm to oversee the children.
This position may require working various shifts, as services may be needed at any time of the day. Some positions may require university degrees, while others require only a high school diploma or equivalent. Experience in counseling or other human services positions is helpful.
