One major difference between general managers and performance managers is that while most managers spend time organizing employees, paperwork, and responsibility, performance managers work more directly with employees beneath them. In an average day, a performance manager may have meetings with several employees in order to analyze whether the environment is conducive to success, how relationships with other employees might be improved, and whether the employee feels he or she is productive. With this information, a performance manager is responsible for making changes in the workplace in order for the successes to be increased and distractions to be removed.
Much of what a performance manager does could be described by the word "coaching". One might spend time helping employees face personal problems in the work place, or encourage them in the positive outcomes of their work. In doing so, the goal is to have the employees in a mood that will lead to consistent and quality output. As can be seen in their name, performance managers must oversee the performance of employees they are in charge of, and in doing so, benefit the company as a whole.
