Cardiologists are physicians who perform duties related to the cardiovascular system. They are in charge of providing patient with high-quality service, listening to their symptoms, following up with tests as required, delivering diagnoses, and overseeing treatment. Some of their main responsibilities include reading test results, providing recommendations for surgery when needed, and conveying information on cardiovascular disease to patient and their families. Cardiologists also participate in medical meetings with other medical staff to determine patient treatment options. They also discuss prevention methods with patients and prescribe medicine as required. Depending on the position, they may also help perform cardiovascular surgery. Cardiologists also use a personal computer to keep accurate patient records regarding ongoing treatment and options.
A medical degree in cardiology is required for this job, as well as a three-year residency in internal medicine and a three-year residency in cardiology. Previous experience as a cardiologist may also be required or preferred. Cardiologists must work well in a team setting; however, they should also perform effectively on their own with minimal supervision.
