Job Description for Purchasing Supervisor
A purchasing supervisor reviews orders received in the company's computer system to begin the purchasing process. After reviewing the orders to determine what items must be sent out from their facility, the purchasing supervisor contacts the company's vendors to acquire the necessary materials necessary to fill those orders. The purchasing supervisor is in charge of maintaining the storage facility to ensure health and safety codes are upheld. Aside from placing orders with vendors, the purchasing supervisor oversees the inventory receiving process. When a truck arrives in the storage facility's dock, the purchasing supervisor signs off on any necessary paperwork and performs an initial inventory of the shipment while supervising clerks who offload the cargo. The purchasing supervisor tells the clerks where the items should be stored and may operate a forklift to help store the items. On the shipping side, the purchasing supervisor directs clerks on which stored items should be loaded onto the shipping truck. The supervisor often operates equipment such as a forklift to help the clerks in loading the materials. After the shipping or receiving is completed, the purchasing supervisor updates the company's tracking systems.
