Senior charge nurses oversee the admission and discharge of patients; in some medical facilities, they will have the say regarding whether a patient should be discharged. Because this job requires a great deal of physical strength and stamina, it is important to be able to bend and stoop, lift heavy items, and stand for long periods of time. It's always important to ensure that staff members adhere to all company policies and applicable laws and regulations.
Charge nurses may provide feedback on-the-spot where performance is lacking, and also through employee evaluations. Where gaps in performance are noted on a large scale, they must arrange for follow-up training and education, which they may also administer personally in some cases. In some jobs where the work environment is particularly hectic, charge nurses focus on supervisory duties; however, they will also tend to patients when possible. This job requires a great deal of nursing experience and excellent communication, teamwork abilities, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work well under pressure.
