Assistants in nursing (AINs) serve a variety of roles in a medical setting, from helping patients perform basic tasks to providing aid during medical procedures. Other duties potentially performed by AINs include conducting physical therapy, administering medicine, helping with bowel care, making beds, and observing, reporting, and documenting health changes for other medical staff. Additionally, the AIN may provide postmortem care. AINs work with nurses, doctors, fellow assistants, and other health care professionals throughout the course of their work day.Read More...
The most common employers for AINs are assisted living facilities, hospitals, and other medical environments. This job may be part time or full time - and the work hours may include day and/or night shifts - depending on the needs of their employer.
The minimum educational requirement for AINs includes a high school diploma or equivalent. They must also meet any state requirements, such as passing an exam and being listed in the state registry of medical practitioners. Because these assistants are required to provide quality care for many patients at one time, multitasking and record-keeping skills are necessary. Additionally, the assistant must be able to work in an environment that includes risks related to sick patients.
