Job Description for HVAC Refrigeration Technician
HVAC is an industry acronym for “heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning.” An HVAC refrigeration technician works to install, repair, and maintain air conditioning systems for commercial and residential buildings. Additionally, they work with companies using larger industrial refrigeration systems (such as restaurants, grocery stores, hospitals, and laboratories) to install new equipment and keep walk-in coolers and freezers operating at required safe temperatures. The HVAC refrigeration technician works with a number of coolant substances and processes, and they need to be familiar with relevant current and legacy technologies. The technician assesses problems with climate control and refrigeration systems and then writes up repair estimates for the customer. The technician is then expected to execute these repairs in a timely manner.Read More...
Building contractors may also enlist the services of an HVAC refrigeration technician when installing climate control or refrigeration systems in a new building or residence. They may also call a technician in when performing a renovation or remodel that requires an upgrade to existing systems.
Additionally, many companies that specialize in HVAC repair offer service and maintenance contracts; in these cases, the HVAC refrigeration technician performs regular inspections and reviews of client equipment. Should the technician notice any defects that require repair, they must note them in a report to be filed with both the client and the HVAC company. HVAC refrigeration technicians typically work during regular business hours, but they must also normally be willing to work rotating “on-call” shifts for companies that provide 24-hour service.
To work as an HVAC refrigeration technician, a high school diploma or equivalent is typically required, as well as technical school or vocational training in the field. Companies generally require experience at an assistant or junior level before hiring HVAC refrigerator technicians who are in charge of executing more complex assessments, estimates, and repairs.
