Job Description for Production Supervisor

Production supervisors can work in a number of different fields, but they are most commonly found in manufacturing and industrial facilities. In some cases they will supervise an entire plant; in other cases, they will manage a specific division with the plant facility. They are responsible for seeing that materials and supplies are stocked and that all the equipment is up to date, safe, and in proper working order. Most of the time, production supervisors will communicate directly with their workers and make sure that all deadlines are being met. The skills and knowledge required for this job vary depending on the size and location of the company. When working for a large company, a supervisor may be put in charge of the receiving department to ensure that shipments are accurate and processed promptly. Other times supervisors may be put in charge of managing the floor and different production processes or heading up the packaging and shipping quarters of the company. Production supervisors work closely with factory workers to help improve productivity. It is also important for supervisors to make themselves available to the workers in case they have any questions. When production supervisors work in smaller factories they generally oversee the entire process. They are responsible for ensuring that accurate materials are being brought to the facility. They also work closely with the workers and oversee the packaging and shipping of the materials. In some cases they are also in charge of hiring and training new employees. Most companies require production supervisors to obtain a bachelor’s degree in business administration and in some cases they can be certified by the Association for Operations Management.
