A senior geologist is a high-level professional who is responsible for overseeing geological operations for a company. There are a wide variety of fields that employ geologists, ranging from petroleum to mining to specialized construction, and a senior geologist is (or several senior geologists are) employed to coordinate geology-related tasks. Depending on the field, the specific tasks of the senior geologist can vary widely. For example, in the petroleum industry, the senior geologist analyzes the geological makeup of potential drilling sites and tests the location's stratigraphic properties to ensure suitability for drilling and safety. Senior geologists are also employed to use geophysical and geotechnical techniques to locate and secure mineral deposits, develop mining structures and operations, and establish natural gas drilling sites, among other tasks.Read More...
Senior geologists are often employed by large global companies with anywhere from a few to several thousand sites and mobile operations around the world. As such, the senior geologist may be required to travel nationally and/or internationally for their work. In addition, the senior geologist should possess strong communication skills, perhaps in multiple languages, and the ability to coordinate large teams (possibly in several distant locations simultaneously). They also must have sound analytical and time management skills.
Educational requirements for this position typically include a master's degree in geology (with extra emphasis on various cross-disciplines relevant to their specific field).
