Job Description for Sr. Geotechnical Engineer
A senior geotechnical engineer is expected to lead, train, manage, and supervise a team of junior engineers, as well as communicate on behalf of the team to other departments such as operations and management. Senior geotechnical engineers must be able to inspect work sites, evaluate the potential risks associated with each site, determine the correct course of action for each project, delegate work to junior engineers as needed to keep the project on time, and train and inform each junior engineer of his or her responsibilities and of any changes to those duties as time passes. Senior geotechnical engineers must keep detailed logs, in writing and on the computer, so that management can monitor the progress of the team during the project. Senior geotechnical engineers are also expected to review the overall progress of each project and to determine ways to improve efficiency and reduce overhead. Applicants for senior geotechnical engineer positions generally must have at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant field of engineering, with a master's in geotechnical or civil engineering preferred. Applicants must have at least eight years of experience in a field related to geotechnical engineering, such as surveying prospective mining sites or performing work related to geological science. Senior geotechnical engineers must willing to travel to (and remain at) remote locations for extended periods of time as needed based on project requirements.
