In addition to repairs, truck mechanics also perform regular tune-ups and part replacements for trucks in order to prevent problems from reoccurring. They work primarily in mechanic shops and the conditions may not always be ideal; sometimes mechanics are exposed to uncomfortable temperatures or a great deal of noise, so it is important to be able to adapt. The ability to drive large trucks may be required, as test drives may be necessary in order to diagnose problems and test trucks after they have been repaired. Some travel may be necessary in order to repair trucks that have broken down, and the expertise to rebuild engines may be necessary for some positions.
Some positions require graduation from an automotive school, though others only require that mechanics demonstrate the required knowledge for the job. Some employers may require a minimum of a high school diploma, while others do not. (Copyright 2018 PayScale.com)
