Some autobody technicians work alone, while others work with a team of other autobody technicians within a commercial garage. This person should pay close attention to detail, as it is their job to get the vehicle back to an acceptable condition for its owner(s). An autobody technician must have the dexterity to work on small details and within small spaces, and this position requires the knowledge and ability to use a wide range of tools and equipment. Autobody technicians should typically hold excellent customer service skills, as they often work directly with customers. Critical thinking skills are also highly important, as the autobody technician must be able to assess the damage on a vehicle and the abilities and cost required to repair it.
Some autobody technicians begin work without formal training and learn through on-the-job experience. However, most employers prefer (and some require) that applicants are trained in autobody repair or refinishing by a trade or technical school. Training programs typically last one to two years, with a focus on hands-on work, physics, mathematics, and electronics.
