A bridge civil engineer will normally perform soil testing before the actual building of a bridge is commenced. That way, the bridge civil engineer can determine if the construction site will be a stable match for the bridge that is being built. The materials being used to create the bridge, such as concrete and steel, will be tested for their reliability by the bridge civil engineer. At times, bridge civil engineers will also oversee the repair and maintenance of bridges. It is commonplace that a bridge civil engineer will be the supervisor or manager of the construction site the bridge is being built on. In that case, it would be customary for the bridge civil engineer to ensure that all construction workers are adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
Bridge civil engineers usually work outdoors while overseeing and taking part in the creation of bridges. When not outdoors, bridge civil engineers will normally have an office, where they review plans. A bachelor’s degree in engineering is required to become a bridge civil engineer. Once one has a degree, the next step would be to get licensed through a program run by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Depending on the area one is in, not all bridge civil engineers will be required to get certified through ABET. One should read up on their current location’s recommendations and regulations.
