Distribution supervisors are responsible for supervising and coordinating all subordinate workers' activities, which may include storing, receiving, shipping, picking, and conducting inventory for items. These supervisors are in charge of making sure that information is correct for all items handled by their department and/or organization. Distribution supervisors must maintain compliance standards and ensure that all organizational goals are being met. Distribution supervisors generally work in an office and warehouse (alternating depending on the needs of the day). These supervisors are often expected to move around the warehouse and sit in front of a computer for much of the day. Companies that provide shipping to customers or handle shipping for other companies are the typical employer for this position, which is typically full time.
While some companies will accept a high school diploma or equivalent for distribution supervisor positions, most prefer or require a bachelor's degree. Employers also look for a minimum of three years of experience working in a warehouse environment. Distribution supervisors must also possess the any certifications and licenses required by their employer and/or the state in which they work. They should also be proficient in basic computer programs such as the Microsoft Office suite, be good problem solvers, and be strong team leaders.
