Job Description for Public Works Director

Public works directors manage public works services for a specific area (such as a city), which may include waste management, water services, traffic control and building management. This job is a civil service position within the government, typically at the local level. Public works directors work alongside - and manage - other city and county employees, such as administrative staff and staff working directly with public services such as waste collection technicians and water treatment facility staff. They create budgets, oversee city projects, create long-term plans and goals for public services, coordinate with other local government officials and implement programs. They also supervise city employees and evaluate the performance of those that work under them.
