Job Description for Shipping Supervisor
Shipping supervisors work in warehouse environments overseeing large amounts of inventory. They supervise other warehouse employees and drivers to ensure that products are prepared for shipment, sent out, and received by clients on time and in compliance with company policy. An important part of this job involves meeting a company's production goals and finding ways to increase productivity. Shipping supervisors are often the liaison between the workers/drivers and upper management, and they are responsible for reporting damages to goods and discrepancies in inventory to the proper department.Read More...
Shipping supervisors are responsible for maintaining warehouse cleanliness, and so they must be aware of safety regulations and enforce them at all times. Because shipping supervisors monitor inventories and maintain associated records, they must be organized. Supervisors must maintain stock levels, so previous experience in purchasing is required. This job is frequently physically demanding, requiring the lifting of heavy boxes. Warehouse workers must wear safety boots and sometimes safety eye wear. The ability to drive/maintain a forklift and operate industrial shrink-wrap machines is often essential.
Employers typically require either an associate's or bachelor's degree for this position. Shipping supervisors must have experience working in warehouses and are often expected to have previously held a supervisory role. They must be familiar with shipping documents, computer literate, and able to communicate effectively with drivers/warehouse workers and upper management.
