Work is usually done inside an office or a lab; however, sometimes staff scientists may be required to work off site. A variety of technical, scientific, and government agencies employ staff scientists. Staff scientists work closely with other scientists and researchers. Depending on the company's size, the staff scientist may report directly to their employer or a supervising scientist.
Staff scientists may work during regular business hours, although this may fluctuate depending on their projects and research.
A bachelor's, master's and/or doctoral degree in the specific area in which they work are mandatory to work as a staff scientist. Depending on the area of employment, anywhere from two to eight years of experience is generally needed as well. Most companies also prefer a knowledge of tests, data management, and data analysis. Aside from education requirements, staff scientists should be creative, detail oriented, and able to work well alone and in groups.
