A claims handler typically works for an insurance company and is in charge of determining whether a claim is legitimate or fraudulent, as well as determining a payout for legitimate claims. They work directly with clients, adjusters, and company representatives in the course of their work. On a day-to-day basis, a claims handler is responsible for guiding people through the claims process, filing documents, interviewing people who have filed claims, and analyzing submitted claims. They are also tasked with sharing claim information with company representatives. Other responsibilities include contacting brokers to help determine whether claims are legitimate, updating client files, and performing other office work. A claims handler usually works full time in an office setting. Travel may be required depending on the company.
