Mechanical project engineers develop concepts into concrete project plans that are worked on by other engineers. They also communicate these plans to the accounting office, which allocates capital and operating funds throughout the project. As the plans are enacted, the mechanical project engineer monitors the team's progress and develops instruments for product testing. Their position may involve work directly on the factory floor. Additionally, the mechanical project engineer takes responsibility for compliance with local and national laws, permit requirements, and OSHA regulations. They must ensure the company is prepared to answer questions from regulators and help reduce risks to employees and future consumers.

Mechanical project engineers must have a wide range of skills with a variety of computer platforms to assist their project planning and testing. Computer aided drafting (CAD) systems that assist in modeling and project management software - for example - are essential. These engineers must also be effective managers, have a deep understanding of the business' structure and various departments, and be able to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical managers.

A bachelor's degree in engineering is typically the minimum educational requirement for this position, and previous relevant experience is typically mandatory as well. Mechanical project engineers must be excellent communicators and have the ability to understand technical writing and blueprints related to their projects.
