An implementation consultant's duties may vary widely across fields, but they most often travel to various job sites, and help with installation of various software or hardware solutions. The work may be mostly mental, although it may be quite physical, depending on whether they are simply installing software on existing machines or crawling through attic spaces to set up wiring for large hardware installations.
Day-to-day duties can vary, depending on what sort of implementations a consultant is doing, but a typical day could include traveling to a new client site, installing and configuring hardware or software, training the client's employees on the newly installed solution, or communicating client needs back to management or development teams. Implementation consultants work with a wide variety of people and must be effective communicators, including while simplifying technical information so that more basic users of a system understand. Most implementation consultants work during regular business hours, although they may be on-call to repair systems that go down during off hours.
General education requirements usually include degrees (bachelor's level or higher) in a related field such as information technology or computer science. Most employers also desire several years' experience in a similar role, and some even specify that it must be with a company of a certain size or with a particular software or hardware package.
Certifications that companies look for in an implementation consultant include specific technical certifications, including in the specific software or hardware they will install. There are also broader certifications available, such as RHIA and RHIT (Registered Health Information Administrator or Technician, respectively) certifications, which demonstrate a general knowledge of rules and regulations involved in the specific industry they serve.
