The lead tester helps oversee a team of testers who work through the software according to instructions and schedules that the lead has helped develop. They work with QA managers on each aspect of testing, working out testing schedules, scripts, and tools compatible with builds coming from programming and engineering teams. The lead tester typically works as part of a bigger team in quality assurance (QA); depending on the developer, QA may be broken down into teams focusing on usability and interface, stress testing, and other facets. The lead tester ensures that everyone on the testing team is focused on the tasks presented to them and accurately reports all findings. Part of the testing may include interface and usability testing, and the lead tester helps collect ideas and suggested implementations to take back to the programming and project design team leaders. They go over the team's testing data and create reports detailing findings that can be used in further iterations of the project’s development.
The education requirements for this position vary by employer, but vocational or university education in computer science is generally preferred. Lead testers typically are hired based upon extensive prior experience as part of testing and quality assurance teams as well.
