Validation engineers play a critical role in the manufacturing process, working to test and validate production systems and technology. These engineers calibrate and otherwise ensure the proper function of machinery or equipment that help maintain quality during the manufacturing process. Often, this means checking quality systems to make sure that they work according to specifications set by the company and/or external regulatory bodies. On a typical day, validation engineers spend their time testing systems. The overall testing process includes such components as designing and implementing test methods, working with testing equipment, performing tests, and keeping testing records. Validation engineers must also budget for and purchase equipment necessary for testing. They must also work with other engineers and manufacturing groups that rely on the results of the testing. When issues are identified, validation engineers make suggestions to resolve the problems and work with these other employees to effect a solution.
Companies typically require that validation engineers have a bachelor’s degree and several years of experience working as a validation technician. Degrees are often in fields such as electrical engineering, computer science, and mechanical engineering. Additional education might be necessary in highly technical fields, such as aerospace. Validation engineers’ work environment varies according to specific field, but typically involves both desk and field work.
