A welder, cutter, solderer, or brazer is a longer title for the position that most people simply call welding. Some welders exclusively weld, but others are required to cut, solder, and/or braze as part of their job. A welder’s job consists of following a blueprint or plan and joining pieces of metal together to fulfill that plan. A welder will also be asked to fabricate structural products with minimal supervision, as well as fabricating complex items with some supervision. A welder is also expected to know how to use common layout tools. A welder is expected to know how to identify materials and to maintain the equipment they use. A welder must know the practices and guidelines of several different welding techniques. A welder is also supposed to know how to communicate efficiently with others and how to follow written and oral directions.
The education needed for becoming a welder includes a high school diploma, as well as certification in AWS welding processes. Some experience is always preferred. Being a welder is very physical work. The duties of welders often require them to sit, twist, climb, and stoop in indoor and outdoor environments.
