Close attention to detail is important in this position, as these surveyors must make accurate measurements and determine property boundaries accurately. They must also be organized and able to read construction drawings, and always consult architects for clarification and questions regarding construction drawings. They must provide data related to location, elevation, and gravitation and use global positioning systems (GPS) to determine longitudes and latitudes of relevant boundaries and features of the locations being surveyed. They also train assistants to conduct surveys and draft maps.
Commercial property surveyors must pass background and drug tests, and employers also require a driver's license and clean driving record, as they often drive their companies' trucks to work. They must be reliable and able to work in a team environment to meet deadlines, and strong communication skills are also important. Most employers require a minimum of a high school diploma or GED with relevant prior experience, and they must also be able to use surveying tools such as tripods, auto-levels, land surveying rods, and GPS.
