Job Description for Fence Erector
Fence erectors are construction laborers who are tasked with installing fences which may be either temporary or permanent. These fences can be used to simply mark off construction areas at large scale projects, or may be permanent parts of residential and commercial construction. Fence erectors typically help mark and align the areas where a fence will be placed, and then dig post holes and help place standards to anchor the fencing in place. Finally, they connect the standards with fencing material and ensure that the fence is properly installed according to design and building directives issued by the foreman or construction manager.Read More...
The areas where a fence will be installed are typically marked by surveying and groundwork crews at construction sites. The fence erector will begin by ensuring that the actual laying of the fence conforms to the marked areas set down by this preparation. Working with other members of the fencing team, they will typically dig post holes and place fence posts as necessary and anchor them in the ground with cement for stability. Fence erectors then connect the fence posts or standards with the actual fencing material, which can range from wooden sections which are carefully constructed for aesthetic value to placing simple chain-link fencing to mark sections of a construction site or commercial parking lot. Once placed, the fence erector will typically inspect the work for stability and safety and have a construction foreman approve it for completion.
Most fence erectors work as part of general labor crews with construction contractors. Many find employment with companies that specialize in landscape and architectural work, which typically involves placement of fencing for aesthetic and protective value. Educational requirements are not strict for this position, but an ability to provide physical labor, perform digging in heavy soil, and manage loads of up to 75 pounds is often necessary. Most fence erectors work on residential and commercial construction sites during daytime hours. (Copyright 2019 PayScale.com)
