Software Engineer in Milwaukee:
Northwestern Mutual was once a great company to work for. New leadership has taken over and the company is a much more chaotic place to work. Now the company works with the mentality that layoffs will be ongoing as they are always looking for places to cut. Benefit have been cut quite substantially. Benefits are now competitive in the market instead of being a shining star which made Northwestern Mutual stand out. The company is trying to run like a start up (constant layoffs and reorgs), but with struggles to invest the necessary money to maintain and upgrade out of legacy technology.

Stable but Limited.
Software Engineer in Boise:
Pros: - Heath benefits - The development team I'm on - You can get away with working 40-45 hour weeks - Relatively stable employer
Cons: - The projects I work on and how they are managed - Working on legacy systems with outdated, irrelevant technologies (as a software developer your marketable skills will atrophy quickly at this company) - Pullman Washington focus (it's very difficult to grow and succeed if you're not willing to relocate to the company's headquarters) - Weak base salary relative to the software engineering industry - They tend to assign responsibilities (direct reports, extra work, more project ownership) without any corresponding compensation (I know coworkers who have been doing the jobs of multiple people and/or performing above their title level for years without promotion or significant raises) - Preachy, Sunday school feel of the company's culture
