Job Description for Air Conditioning Mechanic
An AC mechanic helps to maintain and repair air conditioning systems in residential and business environments. The AC mechanic may work full-time, part-time, on call, or freelance. The mechanic should have strong knowledge of optimizing an air conditioning system. This person needs to be able to properly adjust air temperature, humidity, and distribution to the areas of need by using air conditioning equipment, certain controls, and necessary accessories.Read More...
The AC mechanic may also help to optimize air flow by manipulating air ducts. The AC mechanic may also be present in the installation of new air conditioning systems. It is essential to be familiar with all the components of the AC system and know how the AC system works. Some welding and electrical work may be required, so it is important to have some knowledge in these areas and be aware of pertinent safety procedures. Some troubleshooting and problem solving will be needed in order to diagnose and fix AC problems. Often, the AC mechanic will also have duties dealing with heating and refrigeration systems.
Usually, a minimum of a high school diploma is required. Some jobs will require the AC mechanic to have completed coursework relating to this field. Besides being proficient in dealing with air conditioners, the mechanic must also have strong customer service skills in order to keep customers satisfied with the service provided. Teamwork may also be important when working on some projects. This job can be physically strenuous and may involve activities such as climbing, bending, stooping, and standing for prolonged periods of time. Physical tests may have to be taken prior to being hired. The job often requires travel to places where projects will be carried out, so a valid driver’s license is likely needed.
