AutoCAD structural designers work for engineering, surveying, and construction companies, as well as product manufacturers, and use computer-aided design (CAD) systems and software to prepare drawings and blueprints. Proficiency with customer databases and Microsoft Office programs is also important in this position, and many employers prefer those who have vocational training in CAD and some prior experience.Read More...
A high school diploma may be a minimum requirement for this position, and some employers may require an associate's degree or higher in a relevant field. Knowledge of mathematics, science, and basic engineering is highly beneficial to understand building codes and product specifications, and they must also follow all company drafting standards related to drawing layouts, specifications, dimensions, and layering.
A license from the American Design Drafting Association (ADDA) is highly beneficial for this position, as are communication skills to write reports and work well with civil engineers, architects, vendors, and other employees. The ability to meet deadlines is important for AutoCAD structural designers and may require them to work overtime on occasion, and they must stay up-to-date with relevant AutoCAD technology and software in the marketplace.
