Automation engineering managers may work to implement automation techniques to improve manufacturing processes, or these tasks may be delegated to team members and overseen by the manager. They must ensure that proposed automation projects meet safety and quality standards according to regulations and company standards, and they are often required to personally oversee projects and installations. It's important to ensure that all deadlines are met, and when automation processes fail they must resolve the problems as quickly as possible.
These managers must stay up-to-date with the latest technology to apply it to the automation process. Training for new employees and follow-up training for current employees is often necessary, as well as basic administrative duties such as scheduling and administering payroll and benefits, overseeing a budget, and ensuring that costs are controlled.
