Directors of global sourcing generally work in office environments and often have a number of subordinate employees, which can include area-specific sourcing managers as well as individual buyers. These directors also coordinate with leaders of marketing departments to create long-term plans for sourcing the material used to produce the company’s products, and generally report to a vice president within the company.
These directors interface with contacts outside the company, as well; much of their time is spent managing relations with suppliers. As such, this position requires excellent skills in oral and written communication, time-management, and negotiations.
A bachelor's degree in business, engineering, or a related field and seven to ten years of relevant work experience, including sourcing from both domestic and international suppliers and leadership in the development of contracts with suppliers, are generally required for this position.
Candidates are also expected to have a working knowledge of current business management concepts and systems, including supply-chain practices, lean manufacturing concepts, and integrated enterprise resource planning software systems. Professional certifications, such as the Six Sigma business management strategy or the Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) exam, are highly desirable qualifications.
