Exceptional technical skills are important for these journeymen to identify electrical issues and proceed with prompt repair. They must work well in team settings to complete objectives within given time-frames and generally use a personal computer to verify currents, energy, and other settings, as well as shut down electrical systems before beginning repairs. Other tasks may include analyzing circuits to determine functionality, fixing HVAC systems, changing switches and generators, using multi-testers, and fixing A/C and D/C systems.
Electrician journeymen should have strong communication skills to interpret results and communicate their progress to supervisors and co-workers. They must how to read diagrams and schemes to facilitate the localization of relays and batteries, and ensure that all electrical installations follow established standards. They are skilled in identifying potential electrical hazards and successfully containing them and also use strong multitasking abilities to prioritize projects. However, they should also perform effectively on their own with minimal supervision. An associate's or bachelor's degree in electrical systems is generally required for this work, and hands-on experience is how many careers are built following education.
