Job Description for Planning Analyst

Planning analysts examine marketing trends, sales performance, efficiency, and many other metrics to create plans to improve company performance. These plans may include the implementation of new procedures, technology acquisition, marketing strategies, and changes to the manufacturing processes. The specific day-to-day tasks performed by planning analysts are often unique to the industry in which the planning analyst works. Planning analysts work for a wide variety of organizations, including private companies, medical organizations, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. Some planning analysts work as independent contractors for multiple clients. The planning analyst typically works in an office environment during regular business hours, although overtime may be required depending on the needs of their employer. They may report to planning supervisors or may perform that role themselves.

At least a bachelor's degree in finance, business, accounting, or a related field is typically required for planning analyst positions. Additionally, many employers prefer applicants who hold master's degrees. Additionally, relevant licensing or certification may be preferred. The most vital skills for planning analysts include the ability to interpret many kinds of data, the ability to discover relevant patterns and trends in that data, a deep understanding of mathematics, and the critical analysis skills necessary to interpret what this data means to the industry in general and the organization in particular.
