Project managers are essential in a range of industries, from education, and healthcare to automotive and technology, to facilitate business operations. Project management interns are responsible for assisting upper-management with tasks to meet necessary customer deliverables. They typically work indoors during daylight hours Monday through Friday under the supervision of full-time project managers, and common tasks include outsourcing activities, checking supplier availability, and basic quality assurance. These interns must be tech-savvy, as they should expect to use the Microsoft Office suite of applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access for tasks such as creating reports, tables, presentations, and visualizations. Other software may include industry-specific programs such as Autodesk.
Multi-tasking is an important part of this position, as interns can expect to handle multiple tasks at once, and they must be able to work in high-paced environments with strong organizational skills. Many in this position have handiwork tasks, such as taking notes for archival purposes and tracking and submitting purchases. Project management intern positions are temporary in nature and generally last a few months at a time; successful completion may lead to full-time job opportunities within the field or particular organization.
