Job Description for Psychiatric Technician

A psychiatric technician works at a hospital or nursing home to ensure the safety and care of the patients with emotional problems or mental illnesses. The technician is an assistant to psychiatrists and nurses at a facility. The technician will be delegated tasks and will help to administer treatments to patients via group and individual activities. When activities are carried out, the technician will encourage patients to participate and increase their self-confidence. The technician will also be tasked with monitoring patients, both in person and through CCTV methods. When there are changes in a patient's behavior, the technician should attempt to remedy the situation, but it is also important to know when it is necessary to refer the patient to a nurse or a doctor. The technician will also make sure that patients are eating appropriate meals and taking prescribed medications. The vital signs, height, and weight of the patient need to be recorded periodically. The technician will also be expected to carry out housekeeping duties and keep the area clean. Transporting patients from one department or facility to another can be another part of the job. The technician may have administrative duties such as filing, record keeping, and creating reports.
