A real estate paralegal reports to an attorney, prepares/reviews real estate documents, and ensures that communication always flows smoothly between lawyers and buyers, sellers, lenders and real estate agents. A real estate paralegal can work for various parties in the real estate field, be they buyers or sellers, but the ability to adhere to deadlines is essential for ensuring that properties are closed on time. Real estate paralegals must be entirely familiar with closing, lending procedures and all other aspects of the sale and purchase of real estate. They will file away many documents and have to keep them organized, as well as utilize various computer programs, so advanced computer skills are quite necessary for this job. Paralegals will also be expected to prepare correspondence, so strong writing and oral communication skills are equally important.
Other duties include issuing settlement statements and gathering documents to prepare for closing. Real estate paralegals may have to contact various parties by phone, e-mail or in-person in order to obtain needed documents. Once the transaction is finalized, the paralegal will make sure all ends are tied with post-closing documents. The job often requires experience as a paralegal, along with a college degree; the majority of real estate paralegal jobs are full-time and performed in office environments.
