Senior Engineering Technician Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Senior Engineering Technician in Cheyenne:
"Negotiating."
I wish I'd better negotiated my compensation, as now that I have been in the position for nearly 5 years I see there is almost zero opportunity for raises or promotions. I low-balled myself big time and have been paying for it since, and am now considering quitting and reapplying for the same company and department just to attempt to negotiate better pay.

Senior Engineering Technician in Austin:
"Be an autodidiact."
Never stop learning on your own. Don't be afraid to ask for help and stay out of upper management politics.

Senior Engineering Technician in Cortland:
"Up the Ladder."
Always look for ways to climb that ladder because they won't be given to you freely, let alone on a silver platter. You have to work for advancement, but you also have to ASK for advancement - or at least ask what you must do to advance. Otherwise, you'll spend way too much time stuck in a technician's job, when you could be designing or managing projects, etc. Don't just settle for the "grunt work"!

Senior Engineering Technician in Denver:
"Do it for yourself first."
When you successfully get a offer from a new company and they make a initial offer to you, delay your acceptance and consider asking for more compensation up front. In this day and age you cannot depend upon a company to come through with raises year-over-year to increase your base pay.

Senior Engineering Technician in Seattle:
"Write in pencil."
Always write in pencil because things always changes.
