Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask on separate projects are important for senior systems analysts, and their main responsibilities often focus on software design, programming, and application maintenance. They also develop efficient budgets, troubleshoot problems, manage risks, and schedule deadlines for technical deliveries. They generally use a personal computer to troubleshoot, modify, and maintain specific program codes and work in an office environment during weekly business hours.
Those in this position must be able to forecast specific business results and create solutions which will increase efficiency within their own companies. Aspiring senior systems analysts should be familiar with a variety of programming languages to create effective scripts which decrease workloads. They should work well in team settings, but also on their own with minimal supervision; they may also take charge in managing specific projects on occasion and supervise junior employees to ensure that analyses are completed correctly and in a timely manner. They must always follow strict privacy and safety protocols to ensure their software complies with legal regulations, and strong communication skills are also important to work well with clients and vendors and create effective business relationships.
A bachelor's degree in a field related to system analysis, computer science, information technology, or software development is generally required for this position, and prior work experience as an analyst is highly beneficial.
