Software Developer Reviews
What is it like working as a Software Developer?
July 2019
Lots of freedom, but also responsibility.
Software Developer in Leighton Buzzard:
Pros: I like that there is little to no micromanagement - the higher-ups trust the developers to do their job properly and it's the developers' and testers' responsibility to ensure product quality. There's a fairly wide range of technologies in use, mostly in the Microsoft family (ASP.NET, MS SQL Server, Xamarin, etc.), so candidates should be able to find something that suits their abilities. Communication between staff is great and the atmosphere is friendly.
Cons: The amount of freedom also can be a drawback, especially with employees who lack self-discipline. Code quality deteriorates pretty fast due to deadlines and almost nobody cares to put their foot down to say "not so fast". There are no code reviews or formal testing, and CI is but a dream for now (though there are plans to introduce it). It's a good company that has good ideals, but is still in start-up, cowboy coding phase. Future seems bright, but still getting there.

Excellent.
Software Developer in St. Louis:
Pros: Work from home anytime, flex schedule, great benefits. Excellent pay
Cons: Some projects are boring, same kind of tech

Software Developer in Ann Arbor:
Good benefits, generous vacation, but low annual monetary compensation. According to PayScale, I'm in the bottom 6 %ile, receiving $35k less than the median. The University, or at least the branch I'm under, seems to rely on people having other reasons besides monetary compensation for staying. My chain of command doesn't understand what I do, or its market value. Fortunately for them, I enjoy it.
