Staff geologists support geological projects for their organization. They are responsible for examining conditions in the environment, creating environmental reports that will help ongoing research, providing oral and written geological expertise, and developing and designing methodologies to help improve existing procedures related to data collection. Staff geologists generally work outdoors, although they may spend time in laboratories and corporate offices as well. Employers might include government environmental agencies, mining companies, engineering firms, city planning offices, and others. These professionals must work well in a team environment, as well as on their own with minimal supervision. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are needed as well.
Employers of staff geologists generally require at least a bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, geology, geophysics, geoscience, petroleum engineering or another related field; staff geologists looking to obtain employment in research must have at least a master’s degree, as well as several years of experience in a related field.
