Structural Designer Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Structural Designer in Kennewick:
No project is the same. Focus is necessary. You work on your own a fair amount, and you need to keep on pace. Join a professional association to keep updated on code changes. Be involved and learn all you can. Get your license as soon as you are able, and don't underestimate the amount of study time you'll need to prepare -- budget at least 6 months. Older engineers love passing on their knowledge, so ask lots of questions (after doing a bit of your own homework) and keep notes on the answers. Don't be afraid to throw out possible solutions; you'll learn a lot that way. Be organized -- projects will often come back months, even years later, and you will want detailed notes on what you did and why.
