Job Description for Transportation Planner

Transportation planners design, maintain, and improve community infrastructure such as bridges, highway roads, and interstate expressways so that drivers can safely and easily travel from one place to another. These professionals may work with or for city, local, and state governments. This position may also include creating and implementing strategies to improve or further develop public transportation options.

Planners work with the needs of the public, as well as the limitations of the environment, to build a system of transportation options that meet the parameters of each individual situation. Successful transportation planners are attentive to details and have high spatial reasoning skills that enables them to envision practical solutions to common transportation dilemmas faced by today's communities. This can range from traffic congestion in heavily populated urban areas to a lack of easily accessible and safe highways in more rural locations.

Transportation planners typically hold bachelor's degrees in engineering or a related field, as well as have several years of experience in working with traffic trends and planning (which is essential for designing strategies to deal with the unique challenges of vehicular and pedestrian traffic in a variety of settings).
