Here’s your chance to take a deep dive into our data. Sort the list by filters, including the percentage of workers who say their job makes the world a better salary, place (job meaning), job satisfaction, job stress, gender breakdown, and typical education level.

When you rank jobs by job meaning, you’ll find that certain job types, like those geared toward community services, and medical professions, dominate the top of the list. But where medical professionals – doctors, surgeons, anesthesiologists and other practitioners – also take home some of the highest salaries, those in community service – religious workers, social workers, counselors, etc. – earn considerably less. Workers who go into these fields seem to find satisfaction in helping people despite low salaries. Healthcare practitioners, who went through 11 or more years of school and training, seem to get the best of both worlds in exchange for all their training.

If you do want a job that gets high job meaning numbers without years of training, consider going into a healthcare support role. Home health aides, medical technologists and physical therapy assistants get high marks and require less than a bachelor’s degree. Firefighters also show high job meaning numbers without requiring a lot of schooling. (You do have to pass a pretty intense physical fitness test though.)

Food service and hospitality workers rank the lowest in terms of job meaning. Fast Food Cooks fall squarely at the bottom, but you can also find job titles like Restaurant Hosts and Hostesses, Dining Room and Bartender Helpers and Servers with numbers that are almost as low. Serving people in the medical and social work field earns high marks for rewarding work, but literally serving people at restaurants doesn’t foster a strong sense of job meaning.
