Job Description for Hairdresser / Hairstylist

Hairdressers and hair stylists cut and style hair. They can work in a variety of places such as beauty salons, nursing homes and in the military. Some hairdressers start their own businesses, but many work for established barbershops and salons. They sometimes work for salons as employees or they rent a booth from the owner.
Hairdressers have a physically demanding job because they are often on their feet for long periods of time. They also clean, sweep and maintain the salon between customers. Many of them work part-time, but their hours vary. They often work late in order to service clients and many also work weekend hours.
In the past, hairdressers could learn their trade on the job. They would work under the supervision of an experienced hair stylist. Nowadays, most hairdressers attend vocational schools in order to be trained in various hairdressing techniques. When they graduate, they might serve an apprenticeship under an experienced professional.
Besides cutting hair, hairstylists also color, shampoo, rinse and blow dry their clients' hair. They might operate cash registers and schedule appointments with thier customers. Occasionally, they answer phones and do other clerical work in salons. At the end of their shift they are often responsible for cleaning their work space or the salon and locking up.
Hairdressers often recommend styling products to their customers. They know what products should be used on different types of hair. They often help customers choose the best products for their hair type. They might also sell hair accessories.

  • Keep work station clean and sanitary.
  • Schedule appointments, operate cash registers, and sell hair care products..
  • Shampoo, rinse, cut, bleach, dye, dry, and/or style hair according to client requests and aesthetic concerns.
