Job Description for Painter Automotive

An automotive painter is responsible for painting vehicle surfaces with spray paint equipment, power tools, and other relevant equipment. They also prepare the vehicle for painting, such as through sanding. Automotive painters are required to efficiently finish paint jobs on all types of vehicles using all paint types. They also need to be able to mix paint colors to get the customer's desired color for each order. Additionally, automotive painters are responsible for cleaning and maintaining the paint gun and other work equipment.

This is a physically demanding job that requires substantial standing, walking, stooping, bending, and other motions. Respirators must be worn, as there is frequent exposure to toxic chemicals. The typical employers for automotive painters are auto body shops, and this is usually a full-time job with the opportunity for overtime depending on the needs of the employer. Work hours are not limited to a specific shift, and automotive painters may work first, second, or third shifts.

Requirements for automotive painters typically include a high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of automotive painting experience and/or training. They must also have good vision and the ability to discern colors to provide quality work. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills are also required, as is attention to detail.

Painter Automotive Tasks
  • Use primer, lacquer, resin, or other materials to paint surfaces of automotive units.
  • Remove dirt or grease from vehicle surfaces and prepare the vehicle for painting.
  • Remove old paint via a liquid paint remover, scraper, or other techniques.
