What is it like working as a Photographer?
Photographer in Calgary:
Pros: This job can be fun for young people, or those without families because it involves lots of travel. If you don't mind traveling, and being away from home a lot, it can be a great way to see the country.
The work is relatively hands off, so long as you're doing the job well, and it's great for those who like to work independently and outside an office environment.
Cons: It's a LOT of travel. Sometimes 6-9 hours of commute time to remote areas of the western provinces, and aside from gas being provided, you don't get more pay. You have a fair bit of equipment to take each time, and the hours are long by the end of the week, especially when you include set-up and break-down, which are not compensated.
They don't pay for the total cost of your hotel stays when they send you somewhere. It's $70, which often isn't realistic in larger centers like Calgary. There's no reason an employee should be in debt, due to insufficient hotel coverage, from simply being sent to the location of the next job.
