Civil Engineer, Infrastructure - (City withheld for privacy), Maharashtra, India
I am working in a MNC which does outsourcing work for other international subsidiaries. The current salary I am getting is far less than the industry standards. I am looking for a good infrastructure firm which offers a decent package along with a competent job profile.

How I got my raise.
Manager, Change Management - (City withheld for privacy), Maharashtra, India
When I first started this job I worked alongside another assistant, but she didn't last long and I ultimately ended up doing both jobs on my own. I thought I deserved a higher salary but I was initially hesitant to ask for it.

The hard part for me was finding the right words to describe what I wanted. I didn't want to come off as disgruntled. I also wasn't sure when to ask and I kept putting it off.

I waited until the company's review cycle. I repeated (in my head) the word "fair", over and over. I tried to think about what problems my manager was dealing with, and how I was helping to solve them.

I said: "I know its been hard to fill the other position. Since I'm working out and getting the job done, I'd like to be compensated fairly."

I got a 7% raise and $500 bonus! And, my boss eventually also hired another assistant to help me with my workload.

Go shamelessly high
ABAP Developer - (City withheld for privacy), Uttar Pradesh, India
If you are confident that you will get the job or if you can sense that they are eager to hire you, go as high. For example, for my 5.5 lpa job (which I accepted), I asked for 7 Lakhs. If they say its out of their range, say you are willing to negotiate because you like the outlook of the organization etc.

Never broach the subject yourself. Especially during the tech interview. Wait until they make the offer.
